The government will levy a service tax on goods carried by the railways and on those carried in
inland waterways or along the coast, the finance minister said in his budget speech on Monday.
"The new levy is not likely to impact the prices of essential commodities or goods for mass
consumption, as suitable exemptions would be provided," Pranab Mukherjee told Parliament, while
presenting the federal budget.
Service tax is currently imposed only on goods transported by road, air, containers or pipelines.
