Affected students' in stable condition

The students of the Symbiosis institute who have been undergoing treatment after suspected food poisoning continued to be under medical

observation on Thursday. However, all of them are in a stable condition.

The students living in four hostels of the Symbiosis Infotech Campus at Hinjewadi took ill after eating at the common mess in the campus on Tuesday. The total number of affected students rose to 180 on Thursday.

"At present 157 students are undergoing treatment at eight hospitals in the city, including Ruby Hall Clinic, Prayag hospital and Shashwat hospital. all of them in a stable condition. Till Thursday evening, 22 students were discharged from the hospitals," Rajiv Yerawadekar, director of the Symbiosis Institute of Health Sciences told TOI.

When asked what action the institute would be taking against the mess contractor, Yerawadekar said, "We are waiting for the reports from the Food and Drugs Administration (Pune). We will decide about the action against the contractor after that."

The Hinjewadi police have invoked section 201 (Causing disappearance of evidence of offense, or giving false information to screen offender) of the Indian Penal Code against the three suspects who were arrested on late Wednesday. The suspects were released on bail on Thursday.

The investigations revealed that 141 affected students had eaten food in the common mess on the campus. Assistant inspector Dhananjay Jagdale told TOI: "We have taken statements of 43 affected students. Stomach wash of two students have been sent to the laboratory for chemical analysis."

Jagdale added that, "Prima facie we are suspecting that the students might have given stale food by the mess contractor. We are also suspecting that the contractor might have cooked the food from old food grains.
