IISER set to tap research potential from class XIIth

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISERs) is exploring the possibility of picking up

directly from class XII itself in an attempt to draw more talent towards research in basic science. The exact procedure and modalities of selecting the students are likely to be finalized in a fortnight and would be formally announced in the second half of the next month.

Currently, students are admitted to IISERs for the five-year MS degree course under the Kishor Vyaigyanik Protsahan Yojna of Ministry of Science and Technology or through their ranks in the IITJEE examinations. “But there are a large number of students who are left out either due to less marks at their higher secondary examination or miss the opportunity due to some other reasons. The new option is being looked as the third channel to draw talent which may have n aptitude for science but failed to make it to the IISERs. These students who have been deprived of this pportunity can also be roped in the system by picking them up immediately after their class XIIth,” said professor of chemical biology with IISER Pune AA Natu here on Thursday while speaking to the TOI. Prof Natu was in the city to attend the two-day national conference on chemistry for health being hosted by the Institute of Science.

“The exact modalities of selecting the students at XII standard level will be worked out soon through a brain storming session in the next month,” he added. A government of India initiative, the five IISERs at Pune, Kolkata, Bhopal, Mohali and Thiruvanantapuram were started by the ministry of human resource and development in the year 2006 with active support from prime minister Manmohan Singh. The basic aim behind the project was to attract students to science research as centres of excellence in education and research.
