Japan Transport Minister: No Plan To Meet Toyota

Japan's transport minister said Friday he will monitor developments relating to Toyota Motor Corp.'s (7203.TO) spreading vehicle recall, but has no plan to meet with company representatives to discuss the issue.

"Toyota will recall vehicles not only in the U.S. but also in China. I understand there is no need to recall those sold in the domestic market. Nevertheless, I will be carefully following any developments," Seiji Maehara, Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, said at a regular press conference.

The minister indicated that the government doesn't immediately intend to issue any administrative direction to the car maker or impose any penalty as, when asked about such actions, he said he currently has no plan to meet with the company.

Toyota said Thursday it will recall an unknown number of automobiles in Europe to repair a problem with the accelerator pedal. The company also recalled 75,552 RAV4 sport-utility vehicles sold in China for the same reason.

The announcements followed a recall last week of 2.3 million vehicles in the U.S. which may also have a faulty accelerator.

Of these, 1.7 million were also subject to Toyota's largest-ever recall in November of 4.3 million vehicles in the U.S., due to the possibility of sudden acceleration. On Wednesday, the company added a further 1.1 million to November's total.
