Mental health services from primary level

The Centre has decided to provide mental health services from the primary level and to integrate it into general health care. Expressing concern over the magnitude of common mental disorders, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad on Wednesday said that counselling would be provided in schools, colleges and for out of school adolescents.

Community based surveys show that prevalence of mental disorders in the country is six to seven percent for common mental disorders and one to two percent for severe mental disorders.

Azad said that new components of services for homeless, mentally ill, slum dwellers and other vulnerable groups have been included in the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP).

After releasing the national guidelines on Psycho Social Support and Mental Health Services in Disasters brought out by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Union Minister emphasised that the NMHP was re-strategised for community based approach with an allocation of Rs 1,000 Crore.
