Mysore Kingdom


Although Wodeyars ruled Mysore as chief's very small before 1399, it was only in 1399, Yaduraya founded this dynasty. Chronologywise after rulers reigned this petty kingdom as feudatories without much notable events. The next ruler Raja Wodeyar (1578 - 1617 AD) emerged as the first powerful ruler of the Wodeyar lineage. During his reign, Srirangapatna had owed his allegiance to the Vijayanagara kingdom. The decline of the powerful Vijayanagara Empire was a fortune to him, he defeated Representative Srirangapatna in a battle at Kesare near Mysore and Srirangapatna done as its capital. He later revived a tradition of Vijayanagara and celebrated the famous Dasara for the first time in Srirangapatna. The next ruler Raja Wodeyar ruled out for a short period of two years (1637 - 1638 AD) after the reign Chamaraja Wodeyar (1617 - 1637 AD).

The next successful ruler descent was Sri Ranadhira Kantirava Narasaraja Wodeyar (1638 - 1659 AD). The attack from Bijapur Shahis was killed by him and the rich, as many economic reforms. Coins were first introduced by him in the Wodeyar dynasty. He built forts on both Srirangapatna and Mysore. Later ruler Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar (1659 - 1673 AD) extended his empire by acquiring field Shivappa Nayaka of Keladi family Ikkeri and Palegars in Madurai and Trichy were subjugated.

Reign of Chikka Devaraja Wodeyar (1673 - 1704 AD) was a golden period in the history of Mysore. His administration, with lots of reforms and explansion of his field are worth mentioning. He built agraharas, chavadis and storehouses, etc., and attracted researchers. Literature flourished under him. The next successor Kanteerava Narasaraja Wodeyar (1704 - 1714 AD), Dodda Krishnaraja Wodeyar (1732 - 1734 AD) succeeded in maintaining theterritory, but without any special mention. But the reign of Krishnaraja Wodeyar - II (1734 - 1766 AD) was not so stable, Hyder and tipu became the virtual rulers of Mysore. Both Hyder and tipu was in total control of the area until their kingdom was plundered by the allied team of British, Maratha and the Nizam Shahis in 1799.


During the interregnum, reigned Bettada Chamaraja Wodeyar (1770 - 1776 AD) and Khasa Chamaraja Wodeyar (1766 - 1796 AD) Mysore. After tipu death, old Krishnaraja Wodeyar III, the five years was installed and regent Dewan Purnaiya took care of the administration. The next ruler Chamaraja Wodeyar ruled long as his father (1868 - 1895 AD). Chamaraja Wodeyar IV was the 24th regent of the kingdom, Dewan Sir M Vishweswarayya and Mirz Ismail helped him to transform the kingdom into a modern city. After his death in 1940, was Jayachamaraja Wodeyar, 25 ruler but the kingdom was absorbed rapidly in democratic India as a state. The monarchical ruler ended, but the Wodeyar family still owns the fame and the royal fortune today.
