Promoting science will help country progress

To address the discrepancies in science in India and to free it from 'bureaucratism', it is vital to attract more women to the science

field, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh opined, speaking at the 97th Indian Science Congress recently. He said there is an under representation of women in the field, which is one of the reasons for a disproportion in the area of scientific research. City students feel there is indeed a necessity to attract not just girls but more students, towards science, for it is an emergent field that would empower the country, if more number of students pursue careers in the arena. Here is what they have to say:

Swathi Urs, Instrumentation Technology student, Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering: Yes, it is important to attract more students towards studying science subjects. The more number of students in the country study science, the better the country can progress and compete with other countries. It is also predicted that in the years to come, India and China will rise and fair better than the US in the field of science and technology. Hence, it is necessary not just for girls, but for all students to study science for the benefit of the country.

Krupa C, Instrumentation Technology student, Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering: Yes, there is a necessity to attract more students, specially women towards pursuing studies and careers in science for women for they are more dedicated and fair. However, in order to develop interest in the subject, there is a necessity to ensure that the children get to enjoy good practical exposure from school days itself. The better exposed they are at a younger age, the more they might find the subject thrilling and luring.

Puttalingaiah B K, research scholar, Kuvempu Institute of Kannada Studies, University of Mysore: There is indeed a necessity to attract students especially women towards pursuing studies and career and science/pure science subjects for they can free the field of bureaucratism. However, as a Kannada student, I believe, there is a necessity to introduce Kannada syllabus and to appoint lecturers who can teach in Kannada. For, a lot of girl students from the rural areas might be interested in studying science but might back off from taking it up thinking they might find it difficult to understand the subject when taught only in English.

Nagabhushan M R, student, department of studies in Chemistry, Manasagangotri: There is a necessity to attract students to study science subjects. However, though not many people took interest in pure sciences earlier, the interest in science subjects has been increasing by the day for employment opportunities in the field are picking up too. But there is nothing like attracting only girl students would make a difference. There are good and intelligent young men who can also fare better and help put the country in a better place in the field of Science through their knowledge.
