School rankings 'creating a problem'

The Australian Education Union opposes the website, which will compare results between schools in literacy and numeracy testing done last year.

Union official Anne Crawford in South Australia says federal Education Minister Julia Gillard should put more reliance on schools and teachers to help students who are performing poorly.

"Schools are very open institutions and always happy to talk to parents," she said.

"I think she's creating a problem where there is none.

"Parents have huge access to schools and we would encourage them to talk to teachers about a whole range of things including tests."

SA Education Minister Jane Lomax-Smith says the website was always going to be controversial but will help schools to get extra resources if they are needed.
