Tata Technologies Ltd., the engineering arm of India’s Tata group conglomerate, plans to hire 200 more engineers at its facility in Novi by the end of the year, AutoTech Daily reported Friday.
The company currently employs about 600 people in the United States, including 475 in Novi -- although many are co-located at customer facilities -- and 4,000 worldwide.
The engineering firm held a media event Thursday at the Detroit Science Center, where it displayed sister company Tata Motors Ltd.’s ultra low-cost Nano car. It was the first U.S. appearance for the Nano, which was launched last year in India and will go on sale in Europe next year.
As is the case with the current Michigan staff, president and COO Warren Harris said many of Tata Tech’s new hires probably will have some work experience with U.S. domestic automakers and suppliers. He says the new positions will cover a wide range of engineering functions, with starting salaries between $60,000 and $100,000.
About half of the company’s $262 million in worldwide sales in the 2008-2009 fiscal year came from the U.S. Although overall sales were flat last year, Tata Tech aims to grow to $500 million in the next three years, with the U.S. still accounting for 50 percent of the business. Sales to Tata Motors represented 17 percent of last year’s total.
The company says it provides engineering services, product development information technology services and product management lifecycle expertise to most global OEMs. Main customers in the U.S. include Chrysler, Ford and Honda as well as aircraft maker Boeing. Its work for Chrysler included upfront digital crash analysis.
In addition to its North American regional headquarters in Novi, the Singapore-based company operates offices in California, Illinois, Ohio, Washington and Washington D.C. in the U.S. It also has regional headquarters in Pune, India, and Luton, U.K.
