World leaders for Jyoti Basu's funeral

Leaders from across the world are likely to arrive in Kolkata on Tuesday to pay tributes to Basu. Apart from representatives of Communist parties in China, Cuba and Venezuela, leaders not subscribing to the Marxist ideology are also set to arrive.

CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat said that Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina had confirmed her visit. After assuming power recently, she had written a letter to Basu seeking his blessings. In the letter, Hasina recollected the cordial relation her father, Mujibur Rahman, had with Basu.

Left Front chairman and CPI(M) state secretary Biman Bose said that many leaders from India and abroad wanted to visit Kolkata. “We will probably get confirmations by Monday. I will give you the details,” he said.

Sources told DNA that the party’s state headquarters at Alimuddin Street was flooded with phone calls. The heads of various Communist parties abroad called up and expressed grief. All of them either want to be present or send their representatives for the funeral.
