Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi, India

It will also be the first time the Commonwealth Games will be held in India and the second time the event has taken place in Asia (after 1998). Delhi won the right to host the 2010 Games by defeating the Canadian city of Hamilton by 46 votes to 22 at the CGF General Assembly held in Montego Bay in November 2003.

Commonwealth Games held every four years, involving the elite athletes of the Commonwealth of Nations. Participation in the Commonwealth Games are typically around 5,000 athletes. Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) is the organization responsible for management and control of the Commonwealth Games. This will be the largest multi-sport event held in India.


In addition to the Commonwealth Games, the city of Pune India hosted the 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games between October 12 and 18, 2008. Youth Games offer nine sports: athletics, badminton, boxing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, tennis, weightlifting and wrestling.

As you may have guessed, the various sporting activities such as swimming, athletics, badminton, Bowls, Boxing, cycling, EAD Events, Gymnastics, Hockey, Netball, Rugby 7S, Shooting, Squash, table tennis and weight lifting are all designed to bring the countries together to strengthen relationships.


There are currently 54 members of the Commonwealth of Nations, and 71 teams participate in the games. The four countries involved in the United Kingdom - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - send separate teams to the Commonwealth Games (in contrast to the Olympics, where the UK sends a single team), and individual teams are also sent from the British Crown dependencies - Guernsey, Jersey and Isle of Man - and many of the British Overseas Territories. The Australian external territory of Norfolk Island also sends its own team, which makes Cook Islands and Niue, the two states in free association with New Zealand.


Only six teams have attended every Commonwealth Games: Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales. Australia has been the highest scoring team for ten games, seven in England and Canada for one.


This year the Commonwealth Games 2010 in Delhi, India. In 2014 the Games will be held in Glasgow, Scotland.
