In a move that would bring the education minister great acclaim from parents, Mr Kapil Sibal on Monday said that the minimum age for admission in schools should be raised from three to four years.
At a meeting with principals and parents, a consensus to this effect was evolved. It was also agreed that the minimum age for Class I should be six years. Mr Sibal will write to Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit to consider its implementation. Since education is a state subject, the ministry plans to approach the of Central Advisory Board of Education to consider implementing this at an all-India level.
The HRD minister said: “The consensus was that the minimum age for nursery admission should not be three years. It should be four years. Admission into nursery system at three years adds emotional stress to the child when he should discover the world.”
