Mamata playing footsie with Maoists

West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya has admitted to `lack of alertness’ on the part of the security personnel for the brazen Maoist attack in Silda, West Midnapore district of West Bengal.

But the CPM put the blame on Union Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and accused her of playing ‘footsie’ with the Maoists.

The CPM, in an editorial of the party’s mouthpiece, People’s Democracy, thrashed Banerjee for `not condemning’ the gruesome killing of the 24 security personnel of the Eastern Frontier Rifles and one student by the Left extremists three days ago.

“The Trinamool Congress continues to play footsie with the Maoists as clearly demonstrated by its chief ’s unwillingness to name the Maoists as being responsible for this attack,’’ the editorial noted.

The CPM notes that Banerjee’s silence is surprising since the `Maoists themselves have publicly acknowledged in the media that they are responsible for this attack and that this was their answer to the joint operations to be launched by the Centre and various State Governments.’ Hinting at a deeper collusion between the Trinamool Congress and the Maoists, the editorial cited a statement by Maoist leader Kishenji two days before the attack on the EFR camp. The Maoists leaders, apparently, had announced that Trinamool functionaries would be spared from punishment or action.
