Mamata set to present Rail Budget today

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee is all set to present an ‘aam admi’-focussed Budget Wednesday in Parliament which will likely leave passenger fares untouched and give top priority to streamlining revenues and ensuring security.

Though the ministry is under pressure to revise fares, Banerjee, keeping her eyes on the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar and West Bengal, is unlikely to do so as it will directly affect the common man.

According to agency reports, Banerjee will roll out more trains including the non-stop Durontos and Jan Shatabdi, and introduce a Railway Security Fund to help the Railways meet the security challenges.

Such a fund, says Rail Bhavan officials, will help the department expedite infrastructure development and modernisation of the Railways.

The key challenge of Banerjee will be to raise fund for modernisation without affecting the passengers’ sentiments.
