MP health director digs heels

Director of Public Health and Family Welfare Department Dr Yogiraj Sharma, one of the most controversial officials in Madhya Pradesh, has been suspended, second time in three years. The latest suspension order has been issued to get around a court order that mandated his reinstatement — something the government wanted to avoid given the officer’s tainted past.

Dr Sharma was first suspended in 2007 in the wake of Income Tax Department raids at his home and other premises. Besides recovery of over Rs 1 crore cash from his home, details of investments into real estate, banks and factories running into several crores were unearthed during subsequent raids.

The IT department had also raided the premises of other officers, including an IAS officer, and drug manufacturers. As a result, a massive racket in over-invoicing and other malpractices like fictitious supply came to light, which forced the government to hand in an order of compulsory retirement.
