Nine people, including three women, were killed and over 60 injured after a major fire broke out at the multistoreyed Carlton Towers in the posh garden city area on Tuesday.
All the nine people died of fatal injuries after jumping from the building while trying to flee from the inferno.
More than 150 people were evacuated from the building. Sixty eight people were admitted to the Manipal Hospital with injuries.
At least 19 of the injured, including three Fire Force personnel, are in a critical condition. The deceased are Sabitha, Benazir Kumar, Rajesh Subramanya, Surabhi Joshi, Purohit Madan Singh, Sunil Iyer, Fayaz Pasha, Akhil Uday and Sidhart Padam.
Smoke started billowing from the seven-storeyed building housing 50- odd offices, including those of IT companies, on the Old Airport Road around 5 pm. Though the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, preliminary investigations say that the fire broke out at the electrical duct on the second floor of the building.
"The electrical duct at the centre of the tower is suspected to have caught fire with the smoke spreading from each of the openings on every floor. However, the smoke was thick on the fifth and the sixth floors. Panic- stricken staff jumped off the building which left many injured,’’ P S Sandhu, Inspector-General of Police, Fire and Emergency Services, said While the building is equipped with fire safety equipment, the staff were reportedly unaware of the fire exits.
