UK suspends 60 education providers

Almost 60 UK education providers have been suspended by the UK government in their ongoing investigation into the sudden spurt in

student visas from north India.

India, the MEA said, was closely monitoring the UK decision "to better understand the reasons behind this decision and also to ensure that bona fide Indian students are not adversely impacted".

The UK border agency announced on January 30 they would not accept student visas from February 1 in Delhi, Chandigarh and Jalandhar as they investigated an unusual spurt in visa applications.

The suspension of the British education providers mirrors the action taken by Australian authorities after incidents of attacks on Indian students opened a can of worms there, exposing a number of below par education institutions which were exploiting the points based immigration system to get illegal immigrants into Australia.

It appears a similar process may have been at work in the UK, which may have increased its activities after a number of doors were closed in Australia.

The MEA spokesperson said, "The ministry has taken note of the fact that in parallel with the decision taken to temporarily suspend accepting student visa applications under Tier 4 of the point based system at visa application centres in New Delhi, Chandigarh and Jalandhar, the UK border agency is also investigating a number of UK education providers and has, in the last week, suspended approximately 60 from the education sponsors register."
