What Do Budgies Eat? 

Parakeets (more accurately known as budgerigars), like most other birds, who consume a varied diet instead of just the same old seeds day in and day out. So what do you feed your little feathered friends? Budgies are vegetarians, so they have a nice balanced diet of seeds, vegetables and fruits!


So what kind of fruit we give our budgerigars? Budgies are known to love a wide variety of fruits, including mandarins, apples and pears, if you want to get really adventurous, try some tropical fruits as well! Fruits are an important part of a budgie diet, so be sure to leave room for your little parakeet's nutritional needs and give them a slice of apple in their cages now and then.


Different fruits at different sites can add a little excitement to your life Budgies and valuable nutrients! Use feeding time as another moment to bond with your parakeets, sharing an apple, hand-feed mandarins or even prepare a wet lettuce leaf for your budgie to eat and bathe in!

 
You can mix your Budgies diet with a variety of green vegetables as well. Your parakeet will enjoy things like broccoli and / or cauliflower leaves, Bok-choi, cabbage leaves, dandelion leaves, mustard leaves and even Kelp! You must be a little cautious but some greens can have a negative impact on your Budgie, including calcium deficiencies and liver problems.


A good diet may be critical in budgie breeding and can make the difference between healthy and unhealthy chickens! For these reasons, it is very important to have a piece of cuttlebone and also a mineral block for your budgie in your breeding cage.


Budgies love to eat a variety of seeds, but people are often surprised that they also enjoy eating various nuts and seeds! Budgies will eat things like lentils, beans, almonds, tofu and even Sesame.


As you can see the Budgies will eat a wide variety of different fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, so you can easily add some entertainment and variety to their lives by giving them more than the normal budgie seed mix. Like all animals with higher intelligence Budgies need for stimulation and excitement! Ideally you will hold a pair of budgie together to give each other entertainment, but even when a mixed diet can really make the difference between a sad and unhealthy budgie and a happy and playful budgie.
