What to look for in your first Purple Martin Birdhouse

What to look for in your first Purple Martin Birdhouse

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who want to get into Purple Martin land lording but because of the many opportunities for them, they are worried that they may get into something over your head. This could not be further from the truth! Below I will give you some tips on what to look for.

# 1: Start Small

One of the major misconceptions that people have is that they need a big Purple Martin house to attract the martins. This could not be further from the truth! Actually, I would recommend to start with something easy to manage. I can almost guarantee that if you stick to look after your martins you want to upgrade after the first year. But you do not need to spend a fortune just so you can get started. Ideally, one eight family purple martin house is more than enough to really get you started.

# 2: An easy way to see beyond your Martins

Part of being a Purple Martin landlord is to look over them. You want to make sure that predators do not get to them, and that the house is staying dry so that children do not die. The reason for this is that if your martins are satisfied with the home, there is a very good chance that they will return the following year. So you want to check up on them about once a week, and the only way to make it easy it is to have a Purple Martin house, which will be easily accessible. Therefore, many of them have access holes or doors that will easily pop off so you can give it a thorough inspection.

# 3: Location

If you use a homemade pole, it is important to say at the right height. Purple martins are extremely particular about where they live. They ideally want to be close to your house (they like humans), and would also like to be near a water body. The best of both worlds would be to have a pond nearby with plenty of insects to eat during the evening hours! The Birdhouse should sit at least 12 feet in the air. This means that you need a fairly long rod! Be sure that it is robust and can support sufficient weight to justify the bird house with several nests and baby purple martins!

# 4: Something that suits you!

Really, there is a profusion of purple martin houses on the market in those days. For what you can build one, you can almost buy one, and it is likely that the professionally manufactured it will be much better quality than what you can build. They understand that the nests have to be dry, the doors must be of a certain size, there must be enough space in each area, but not too much, etc. All these factors are taken into account. For this reason, I highly recommend you do plenty of shopping around to find one that fits your style and it would be a good fit for you.
