Bangalore sees a low turn-out on Voting day

The 8-year-long wait for the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) polls was just not good enough for Bangaloreans to get out and vote on Sunday. The turnout on V-day was disappointing: 44.60%.

Cynicism, indifference, especially among the middle and upper classes, towards the entire civic system seems to have kept a majority of voters away from the polling booths. “It is unfortunate,” said Trilochan Shastry, the convenor of Karnataka Election Watch.

Shastry attributed the growing indifference to the choice of candidates, who were mostly unknown to voters, erosion of trust over the years about governments, corruption and the fact that the upper segment of the society was not dependent on the government for any of its needs. Cheryl Rebello, communications coordinator of Janaagraha, blames the city’s growing migrant population for the low turnout. “In many booths, the supplementary voters list was not furnished to enable the newly-registered voters to cast their vote.”
