Cong, BJP, Left iss ue whips

Hectic behind-the-scene preparations were on to get the much-fought-for 33 per cent Women’s Reservation Bill passed in the Rajya Sabha, 14 years after it was first introduced. If passed, it would make the centenary year of the International Women’s Day quite a historic one for India.

Women solidarity was in full display in Parliament on Tuesday. Congress president Sonia Gandhi met all the women MPs to work out a foolproof strategy to help the Bill cross the hurdles that are sure to crop up on the floor of the Upper House on Monday.

The Congress and the UPA allies, the BJP and the Left Parties have issued whips for their MPs to be present in the House to help the Bill through.

In the last tenure of UPA when the Bill was reintroduced in the Rajya Sabha, a protective cordon had to be thrown around Law Minister H R Bharadwaj to save the Bill from being hijacked by its traditional opponents from the Hindi heartland.
