Cops crack the whip as Bareilly flares up again

More areas were placed under curfew in Bareilly on Friday following fresh violence in Subhash Nagar and Sanjay Nagar localities where rioters from two communities indulged in brick-batting and setting shops and vehicles on fire. No relaxation in curfew was given in any area.

ADG (Law and Order) Brij Lal said the police fired rubber bullets and tear-gas shells to disperse the rioters, causing injuries to three persons. Bareilly SP (City) Rakesh Jolly and six constables were injured in the brick-batting by the mob.

Brij Lal said the commandant of the 32nd Battalion of PAC, Jyoti Narain, four ASPs and four deputy SPs have been sent to Bareilly to help the district police bring the situation under control.

Now, the round-the-clock curfew is in force in five police station areas of the city. On March 2, curfew was first imposed in Prem Nagar, Qila, Baradari and City Kotwali after mob indulged in violence and arson following a dispute over the change of route of a Barawafat procession.
