Crowds warm up to boxers

Among other things that clicked for the Indian boxers, the most palpable from the sidelines was an overwhelming support from the crowd that thronged the refurbished Talkatora Indoor Stadium on Wednesday.

The 2700-capacity facility was packed with spectators from in an around the capital, dissuaded neither by strict — almost stifling — security arrangements nor by oppressive heat. And they were suitably rewarded as the Indian boxers, inspired by the surroundings, produced their best-ever performance at the Commonwealth Boxing Championships, winning six gold medals.

Every time an Indian’s bout was announced, there were wild cheers, but the stands erupted during the penultimate tie of the day when Vijender Singh stepped into the ring. The boxer didn’t have to look to the scoreboard to know his count, the noise hitting the crescendo would tell him the judges had just awarded him a point.
