The Doxie Race

Dog owners love their dogs. But with Dachshunds that affection when new heights. The reasons are not hard to understand. Doxies is special in many ways.

Translation from the German "badger dog" shows just one of those ways. Bred the beginning of the 1600s to hunt these ferocious little creatures, they Doxie was ferocious himself. That fearless and confident attitude continues today.

That feisty nature can be a positive or negative.

Dogs that are independent can make great companions, as also do those exploratory and playful. It gives the dog a willingness to try new things and lots of energy. It also means that extra patience and skill is a requirement for training them. Dachshund are more likely than many other breeds to strive for alpha status in household. Reminding them that humans are alpha may require a long struggle.

But that training should be appropriate to the breed's physical and mental characteristics.

Doxies weigh between 10-30 kg and is 9 inches high at shoulder. Toy varieties are a lot smaller, often only 5 inches high and less than 8 pounds. Their average lifespan is between 14-17 years.

With their long bodies and short legs, Doxies are much more prone to spinal problems than other breeds. Rough handling can cause serious problems.

At the same time because they are assertive simply screaming will not work. At best, producing a fearful dog, at worst, they may become hostile and aggressive in response.Doxies can look at their coach as an enemy badger. Owners should be prepared because of the barking become more common in Dachshunds, too.

They make for excellent pets and companions with the right strategy.

There are three basic varieties - Wire-Coats, Smooth-coat and long hair. But the difference goes beyond the type of fur, the sport. The personalities of the three types tend to follow a pattern as well.

Smooth haired Dachshunds often attach themselves to one person in family. While they will tolerate other people, they tend to be wary and unapproachable by other animals. The Wire-haired is usually more playful and outgoing. Long hair Dachshunds tend to be slightly more placid. Though which every Doxie, they are up to a game of fetch, when the opportunity presents itself.

Apart from spinal problems, Doxies less often suffer from diseases that are more prevalent in other races. Diabetes, stomach cancer and other diseases are possible, but far less common in Doxies. Urinary tract problems (such as stones) can occur but are more likely in specific varieties Double Dapples and those with blue eyes. This black tend to have more eye and hearing problems, too.

Raising any dog can be a challenge if they are to be healthy and happy. Dachshund owners generally report that the rewards in their case is specially large. They is very loving and very loyal. The people who live with them a tendency to return the favor.
