Maoist killed in Udupi encounter

A Naxalite was killed in an encounter with the police in Udupi district on Monday. A police constable was wounded.

Udupi SP Pravin Pawar said the encounter happened at 4.30 pm when the anti-Naxal force and the police were holding a combing operation at Mutlupady, near Ajekar.

The Maoist killed has been identified as Vasanth Gowdla (30) of Naravi in Belthangady taluk. Two of Gowdla’s associates, including a woman, escaped into the thick forest. Doctors at the Kasturba Hospital were to perform a post-mortem on Monday night. Constable Rajesh of the anti-Naxal force, injured in the shoulder by a gunshot, was admitted to Karkala government hospital.
