Mulayam takes hard stand against women's reservation bill

After moving at a tangent with his demand for a "quota within quota" for the the Muslim, Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Tribes women within the Women's Reservation Bill (WRB), Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav did a 360 degrees turn to announce that his party would oppose the bill tooth and nail. "We would do everything it takes to stop any such law being framed in the country as it is a design of the Congress party to keep Muslim and backward women out of Indian politics," he said in Lucknow on Sunday morning.

When the WRB was tabled in the Lok Sabha on March 8, Mulayam led the tirade against the bill in its present form. "We are not against reservation for women. But we want that the fairer sex among the Muslims, Backwards, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes must also get a fair deal. This can be done by providing them reservation with that being provided to the women in general," Mulayam had emphatically claimed in the house.
