In an excellent example of reverse engineering accompanied with innovation, the department of applied physics at Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) has developed a 'radiation resistant glass or RRG', opening the doors of self reliance for all atomic research centres which use this glass in the hot cell of their reactors.
RRGs were being imported from Germany for a long time. But after Germany stopped exporting the material, India was forced to develop it. The new RRG has been developed under a two and half years research project sponsored to the tune of Rs 10 lakh by Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam.
