What you should know about Wine Cellar Design

You will learn everything you can about wine cellars, before you start your wine cellar design. Some guides make it look like it's easy to create your own basement at home when in fact the only easy part is to assemble the wall-mounted wine racks. The rest of it can be very difficult to get right, and you have to get quite technical before you can get it right. You may be better off cellaring your wine at a facility which allows you to store your wine, and then take it up when you want to drink it.

Temperature

The best temperature for wine is between 50F and 60F (10C and 13C). It may be harder than you think to keep the wine at this temperature constant. Central heating is the biggest culprit in the endocrine disrupting potential for wine storage. Your water heater is on during the day to raise the temperature well past the ideal storage temperatures.

Your wine will be subject to a drop in temperature at night when the heat is off. The wine will be enlarged and then contract due to temperature changes. One way to circumvent this is to use your basement, which is the best replacement for the stone walled basements of old houses.

Unfortunately, a boiler in the basement may cause these adverse temperature fluctuations, which is as bad for wine. Keeping your basement cellar at the right temperature, you should make sure your basement is well insulated with Odorless insulating material.

Natural lighting

Home basement (if you have one) is by far the ideal place for a wine cellar, as your wine collection will not be exposed to light. Light speeds up deterioration of your wine. Because red wines usually come in dark colored bottles, reduct light exposure, such problems will be less likely to occur.

White wine and champagne on the other hand is very sensitive to light, and this is reinforced by the fact that they usually come in pink bottles. So make sure wine cellar design allows for very minimal sunlight coming through.

Heavy Appliances

In your basement design that you should account for vibration and movement. You should put wine in a horizonal position. If there are any dryers and washing machines near your wine cellar that can pose a problem for your wines.
