Women officers in Forces win historic battle

In a significant judgement, the Indian Air Force and Army have been asked to grant Permanent Commission to women officers.

Over 50 women officers had approached the Delhi High Court seeking the same terms of employment rules as their male counterparts.

The court ordered that the two Armed Forces reinstate all the women officers who had approached it petitioning against denial of Permanent Commission. In its 32-page order, a division bench comprising Justices S K Kaul and MP Garg directed the government to also reinstate those who retired during the case.

In the Armed Forces in India, women were forced to retire after 14 years in service, irrespective of their record during the period of service. Such rules also deprived women officers of pension and other post-retirement financial benefits while men could work for a full term after five years in the Armed Forces. Women were eligible for Permanent Commission only in the medical, nursing and dental services of Armed Forces. They are eligible for Short Service Commission in the non-combat or support arms of the Armed Forces.
