Best Advice for Travelers Rebook Your Flight

Still trying to figure out whether you can get to Europe this weekend in spite of all the chaos caused by the cloud of volcanic ash that has virtually shut down air traffic there? You’re out of luck but not out of options.

Here’s the advice of the airline industry: Consider taking up the airlines on their offers to rebook flights without a penalty.

You cannot depend on the airlines to provide you with room and board if you are stranded in the meantime. Because the cancellations are not the airlines’ fault, they have no obligation to feed or house passengers stranded at airports in the United States or Europe.

“These are acts of God, force majeure,” said David Castelveter, a spokesman for the Air Transport Association, which represents American air carriers. “If you have flexibility to not go, take advantage of it.”
