'How many trees will go?' asks Karnataka high court

The high court on Thursday, hearing a petition filed by the Krishna Apartment Owners’ Welfare Association, ordered a stay on the cutting of trees in the Indira Gandhi Musical Fountain.

The court directed the Bangalore Development Authority and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike to submit a report by Tuesday, detailing the number of trees earmarked to be cut, and list also the different species of trees that would be felled.

The architecture firm that had bagged the contract for the construction of the proposed National Military Memorial, which would occupy a portion of the park, had claimed that three eucalyptus trees and one small Ashoka would be felled, a claim the petition questions.

The petitioner produced an aerial image to show that the park is an important lung space for residents of the area, including those residing on Ali Asker Road (where Krishna apartments are located), Millers Road, Vasanth Nagar, and Cunningham Crescent Road.
