Militants blow up rail track in J&K

In the first attack on Kashmir rail network, militants on Thursday night blew up two feet of the railway track in Pulwama along the Qazigund-Baramulla line, disrupting train services linking north and south Kashmir.

The incident took place at Galbug area of Pulwama district, some 44 kms from Srinagar, when suspected terrorists planted a IED on the tracks and detonated the same around 10 pm on Thursday night. No casualties were reported as trains do not ply on this link at night.

The attack came ahead of a scheduled inspection by senior officers of some on-going work in the railways in Kashmir. The police suspect that some taxi operators, whose business had been hit due to introduction of the train link, may have colluded with Hizbul Mujahideen to carry out the blast.

“It was probably an IED blast because there was not much damage. We have recovered some wires from the spot,” senior superintendent of police, Pulwama, Kifayat Hyder told newspersons at the spot. CRPF inspector general, M C Asthana, said the blast could have been triggered by a “regular, high-power explosive.”
