Setting the tone for Thursday's crucial meeting of the core group of chief ministers on prices, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called for a political consensus on the issue and urged the parties to come together to find an answer to the problem.
Asked about the Left threat of unleashing a `jail bharao' campaign against the volatile prices, Singh told reporters at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday evening that `agitational tactics' would not work. "Problems cannot be solved by agitational tactics," he said.
The PM asked the parties to come together and evolve an adequate response to the price turmoil. "I would like all the parties to pool in their wisdom, knowledge and experience to evolve a pragmatic and practical solution to the problem," he said.
The PM's words on the sidelines of a function for giving away the Padma awards were seen as an indication of the consensual approach to be emphasised at the meeting in the presence of several chief ministers.
