Canary Islands, which includes the popular Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, as visitor numbers fall by around 15% in the first five months of 2009 compared to same period in 2008, according to BBC. An unfortunate combination of a weaker pound and the closure of certain large airlines and tour service on the islands has contributed to current problems.

The islands have not been sitting idly by, however. Local authorities take decisive steps in the form of foreign investment of up to 120 million euros over the next four years to give the islands for a lift. They are not the only ones to intervene, either. Private hotels use quiet period as an opportunity to renovate. Future visitors to the islands will have the opportunity to benefit from these efforts. Meanwhile, holidaymakers enjoy deals on Canary Islands hotels that are as low as 15 pounds per person per night for a two person self catering apartment in Playa De Las Americas, Tenerife - and enjoy a more peaceful holiday experience at the same time.
