Amdavadi to show royal fashion to Paris

Ahmedabad will soon make its presence felt in the world of hi-fashion. Pierre Berge, the man who helped found the legendary Yves Saint

Laurent brand, has invited Umang Hutheesing to present the ‘Deepak and Daksha Hutheesing’s collection of royal Indian costumes from 1911 to 1947’ in Paris.

The event will be held as a collaboration between the Pierre Berge-YSL Foundation and Hutheesing Heritage Foundation on February 9 at the Yves Saint Laurent foundation. “This is a big honour for both Ahmedabad and me,” Hutheesing said.

He added that the period between 1911 and 1947 was eclectic and dramatic in opulence in terms of royal costumes. It all started in 1911 with the Delhi Durbar of king George V and queen Mary which saw a unique synthesis between European and Indian fashion.
Berge is not just a businessman. He is the cultural czar of Europe and has been the head of the famous Paris Opera for over 20 years. He has advised many French presidents on cultural issues. Lifelong partner of the legendary French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, he was CEO of Yves Saint Laurent Couture House till 2002.

Hutheesing said he will announce his plans for the Ahmedabad Fashion Week (AFW) in Paris.

It was only in November 2009 that a controversy about AFW trademark was resolved when the Ahmedabad city civil court ruled that Hutheesing, who originally mooted the idea, had the right to use the trademark. A local company had come up with a fashion week by the same name.
