Congress MLAs and MLCs from Andhra and Rayalaseema have decided not to join the proposed joint action committee to spearhead the Samaikyandhra movement.
At the same time, they have decided to work with other political parties of the region on specific matters.
About 30 MLAs and MLCs met in the Assembly Committee Hall today to discuss their future course of action.
Talking to newsmen later, Government Whip and Singanamala MLA S Sailajanath said there was no need to form a political JAC when parties like Telugu Desam and Praja Rajyam had already taken up different programmes like bus yatra for the Samaikyandhra cause. When the goal was common, there was no compulsion for the Congress to join the proposed JAC of TDP.
However, the Congress would fight jointly with other political parties depending on issues.
The Congress would strive to protect interests of `United Andhra Pradesh’, he said and hoped that the consultations process initiated by the Centre would lead to keeping the State united.
Meanwhile, senior Telangana Congress leader and former minister R Damodar Reddy, while condemning the lathicharge on Osmania University students, warned that the region would become an `agnigundam’ if the police continued to behave in the same manner.
It was not proper for the police to stop funeral procession of Venugopala Reddy, he said.
Members of Telangana Congress Monitoring Group (TCMG), who included former PCC chief P Narasa Reddy, former MLA T Ramachandra Reddy, PCC office-bearers R Ananda Bhaskar, G Niranjan, Rajini and others, observed mourning at the Gun Park opposite the Assembly to pay homage to Venugopala Reddy and others who have lost their lives for the Telangana cause. They urged the student community not to resort to suicides but to carry ob their agitation peacefully.
BJP leader N Indrasena Reddy urged the Central Government to introduce a Bill on Telangana in next Parliament session to avert any more deaths/suicides in the region.
Academician and MLC Chukka Ramaiah urged the State Government to treat the Telangana movement as a social problem and not as a law and order issue.
