PDKV to start nuclear and space technology dept

The utility of nuclear sciences in agriculture, Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth is planning to start a department of nuclear and space technology. It is also speculating a formal MoU between the university and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, for research and development of high-yielding and disease resistant varieties of regional crops like soyabean.

Speaking to the TOI, PDKV vice chancellor V M Mayande said that the university has already sent a proposal to the state government to start 17 new courses. The nuclear and space technology course is one of them. "BARC has already produced about 37 varieties of high yielding and disease-resistant crops using radiation technology for mutation. The university plans to use BARC's expertise to work on certain regional crops like soyabean," he said. The university has been conducting research on newer varieties of all types of crops but is now expanding its work on oilseeds and pulses.

Mayande said the need for more such varieties has risen in the recent past due to erratic monsoon, climatic changes in the region and increased biotic and abiotic stress in the last 6-10 years making many crops more susceptible to even minor pests which were unknown on crops like soyabean and cotton. The university is also planning to bifurcate certain basic subjects like botany into genetics and plant breeding and seed technology.

On some recent achievements of PDKV, Mayande said that the university has released four varieties in May. These include a high-yielding drought-resistant and early maturing variety - the PKV-Tara (Trombay Akola Red Arhar) variety in pigeon pea, PKV-NL-260, a linseed variety, PKV-Kaboli-4 a gram variety and PKV-NT-11, a sesame variety. The university also released the technology of two farm implements, a slasher which can cut stems of crops like soyabean and cotton into small pieces so that they can be ploughed back into the soil and a pneumatic planter which can mechanically plant seeds into the soil.
