Appoint Pawar cricket minister: Gadkari

With commencement of the budget session of Parliament less than a fortnight away, BJP has hit the streets to mobilise public opinion against the Manmohan Singh government’s failure to contain the spiralling food prices.

Led by BJP president Nitin Gadkari, Opposition leader Sushma Swaraj and senior leaders Murli Manohar Joshi, Ananth Kumar and Vijay Goel, the saffron outfit’s Delhi unit organised an impressive show of strength here on Wednesday afternoon.

The protest rally was part of the month-long agitational programme drawn by the BJP brass to tap ‘growing popular anger’ against the government’s inability to rein prices of essential commodities, particularly food items, which had
hit the poor and the middle classes, especially the salaried sections, hard.

Party workers converged at the Jantar Mantar, armed with flags and posters and wearing garlands of vegetables, chanting slogans against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and food and agriculture minister Sharad Pawar.

“Prices are rising and our agriculture minister is not concerned about it at all. He is more concerned about the fate of IPL matches. Is he the civil supplies minister or the cricket minister? I don’t know. The prime minister should appoint him as the cricket minister,” Mr Gadkari said while seeking to puncture the NCP leader’s credentials as the man best positioned to address the situation.
