Everyone and their brother get all excited about the idea of getting to hang out backstage with their favorite band or artist. That said, getting backstage passes can be a bit difficult unless you are lucky enough to win them from the local radio station. While there is never any guarantee, there are a few things you can do to your chances of getting to hang out with your heroes.
First off, you can participate in local media as a freelance photographer or journalist. Give a cold call to the media outlet and pitch them an offer to interview and photograph the band. They are accustomed to these calls, so if you sound like you know what you are doing is a good chance they will take you up on your offer. Although, of course, it means that you need to actually do the interview and write a decent paragraph.
You can also call the office and ask if they need extra stage hands. Even the most coveted positions are normally filled by persons who regularly acts as a stage crew, extra help to set up and break is always welcome, and there is a good chance that they will bring you on. It is clear that the potential downside of taking this route backstage is that you may be assigned a job that keeps you outside to pick up trash, while the show takes place, but the odds you have a chance to become friends with one of the "in crowd" is pretty high as well. Who knows? If you play your cards right, you just end up invited to the after-show party!
Alternatively, you can always just show up during sound check on your heroes just happen to be imminent. Although it may seem ballsy, it happens. I've had some good conversations with the stars during their downtime before the show.
Of course there are a number of other tricks you can use to get yourself that coveted backstage pass, but just remember that whatever you decide to do to get in, nobody likes a fool. Play it cool and enjoy the show!
