Canadians love PCs for work and fun

Canadians see their computers as part of their work and leisure time, more essential to their lifestyles than having a TV or stereo, says marketing research firm, the NPD Group.

The trend isn't going to change because the PC has become such a big part of people's lives, said Darrel Ryce, director of technology and entertainment.

"It's just really hitting the tip of the iceberg at this point," Ryce said Friday.

"It is our music. In a lot of cases, it is our entertainment from the point of view of looking at video or film or TV on screen. It is the way in which we share and communicate family stories, pictures."

Canadians spent $4.6 billion on technology products like computers and hard drives, monitors and software last year, up one per cent from 2008, the NPD Group said.

Ryce also said as work hours get longer, Canadians are investing in technology, like computers, that allows them to work or communicate on the go.

But it wasn't all work for Canadians last year.

Total sales figures for gaming-related products generated about $2 billion in revenue, more than half of which went to the games themselves for video game systems.

But revenue was down 11 per cent last year, Ryce said about gaming.
