Koi Care: Heron prevent theft

Herons are beautiful and majestic birds, but they have one fault: they are predators that need to make a snack out of your koi. That is why taking care of your fish, always vigilant, never leaving your pond unsupervised.

This is misleading birds: They may seem harmless when you first noticed them lurking around your Koi garden. Standing about 2 to 3 meters high, they have a very wide wingspan, with a graceful appearance. But never be fooled by their appearance, for what you're looking at are predators on prowl, ready to snatch your fish!

When you find that your missing some koi pond, big chance is that the heron is the culprit. When you see the big gaping holes in the sides of your koi, this is an indicator that a heron tried to catch your fish, but just do not have the necessary grip to make it successful. Other cases include a fish lie in the grass a few steps away from the tomb, and this is a result of the heron drop the fish when it's shoveled it out of the pond.

So given these facts, there are some necessary steps that you can do to avoid these adverse events. These "detours", but will work only for a minimal time.

1) Plastic herons - You can place a fake, plastic heron in your garden. The primary purpose of this one is to prevent the heron from landing on the specific site. This will work for some parts of the season, but may prove ineffective when mating season begins, as they may land in the vicinity of plastic heron when looking for their mate.

2) The noise - If you catch a heron, which is about to catch your fish, make as much noise as you can and physically intimidate the best you can. You can yell, throw things at it, or whatever it is that can scare it. Remember: the more fear is that less would come back any time soon in your pond.

3) Change your routine - you can always change your routine. These birds are smart enough to know that you are around. Make frequent visits to your pond, so to increase your chance of catching the herons in action. If you can not do it, you can ask or solicit a person to visit your pond instead. To allow older children and credible to visit your pond is another good idea, as this can add presence to your koi pond.

4) Creating a hideout in the pond for your fish - Another great idea is to create a hiding place for your fish in the pond. You may notice that after a heron attack a pond, it might seem that the bird has been throughout its prey, buy you will find that your Koi will be shown from these strange hiding places when the attacks stop.

By providing a hiding place for your fish to protect them from attack, you get a significant reduction in the amount of fish that will capture the heron (not fret if your koi seems like they hide from you because they know that you will not harm them)!).

5) Do not refilling your pond right away - We take care of your pond, never refilling your pond right away in an event of a heron attack. The bird will be forced to search for another feeding ground instead if you want to take some time before you restock your pond.
