Mysore varsity struggling to start distance education

The University of Mysore's ambition to expand its jurisdiction by starting the distance education courses is facing opposition.

A week after the varsity's Syndicate gave its assent to start the courses, the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) is opposing it by contending that the open and distance education is its forte.

As the Mysore varsity is in the process of approaching governor-chancellor H R Bharadwaj seeking his clearance for setting up distance education directorate to offer the courses, KSOU V-C K S Rangappa said he does not approve it. Five years ago, the KSOU's objection to governor-chancellor T N Chaturvedi had derailed the Mysore varsity's plan.

"The KSOU's concept is different from the conventional universities. They should not go together. I don't approve it," he said during a meet-the-press hosted by the Mysore Journalists Association on Monday. "We have got infrastructure and specialization to offer distance courses. The conventional universities do not have it. Besides, it is anybody's guess as to why they are eyeing it," he said hinting at the business involved.

He wanted to know how can the Mysore varsity offer distance courses when the intake to its regular courses are coming down. In reply to a question, Rangappa said he is against all conventional universities offering the distance courses. He will discuss the issue at the board of management, the highest decision-making body and approach the governor-chancellor. But he contended that the KSOU does not fear that its intake will come down if the conventional universities offer the distance courses. "I like competition," he stated.
