Pet shop or breeder parrots - to choose from?

Those who are prepared to commit to a parrot and looking to buy a garden to make a choice between PET shops and breeders parrots.

Parrots hand-raised by farmers can be a little more expensive but this is considered the best alternative for those looking for healthy, well-adjusted bird.

A bird that has been hand-raised by a breeder would have taken, and hand-fed by a human being and will be familiar with the idea of being handled by humans from a very early age. Ideally, the parrot you bring home has had such training, but should have been accustomed to the need for hand-feeding before you bring him home.

Breeders parrots normally have been raised by a person after their passion. Such a person can be expected to have invested a lot of time and effort into raising their birds, and this commitment is reflected in the quality of the bird you get.

Pet stores may seem, in comparison, to be a less personal environment. Due to the quantity of birds in the shops, there is great risk of a parrot in this environment, having some health issues. That said, it is important to stress that not all breeders automatically better than all the pet shops - it is a question that you have to evaluate each case before making a ruling.

If you decide to look for breeders parrots, you will discover that the Internet and the local newspaper will give you a number of leads. A local parrot or exotic bird society can also be a good place to find links to breeders.

Once you have your list of breeders, you will need to assess the quality of each of their aviaries, and not make your choice based solely on the lowest price.

In your first chat with a breeder, you can get an idea of whether the person doing so out of genuine interest in parrots or as a purely commercial venture. This assessment may be useful to make your choice.

Whatever their motivation, if they are running an operation that is above reproach, and providing proper care for their parrots, you probably get a good bird.

A parrot breeder with a love of the birds may be able to offer you that unquantifiable something extra that can be a big bonus. The ones you really want to avoid, will be commercially motivated breeder who treat it as a massive operation with little regard for the birds in their care.

When you get a feel for the breeder, you can request a visit to the aviary to see their birds. Some farmers who run a closed aviary to ensure a high level of hygiene can refuse this request, and you should not immediately jump to dire conclusions, because this is a valid reason.

In this case you should use your overall assessment of the unit to make up your mind. There are other growers who are willing to let customers go through and see the parrots in their cages.

If you get this walk-through, you should consider the overall cleanliness of the place. You can take a look at the feeding dishes to see if the parrots are black in their diet, and you can get an idea of health parrots breeders based on their appearance.

Good, healthy plumage, cheerful disposition and willingness to interact with people, are signs of a well-adjusted bird. If any of the above, cleaning, food or the quality of parrots makes you uncomfortable, you are best advised to seek other breeders. Parrots from aviaries with lower standards likely to be difficult to handle when you take them home.

Once you've found the right breeder and choosing your bird, you sometimes have to wait for the bird to be ready to go home. It may need to be weaned. It is best to have this happen before you take your pet home, otherwise it can be a stressful experience for the parrot and for you.

A good breeder will help with the first day of settling in to be available to answer questions and concerns. Because of their first participation in the life of your parrot, they will be your best guides in getting to know your adopted pet. It's in your best interest to build a good relationship with the breeder.

There is no exaggerating the significance of the fact that there is a direct correlation between the quality of the breeders and parrots. The time you invest in the selection process will be totally worth it because it will lead you to high quality breeders parrots!
