Thousands of commuters were stranded for almost three hours on Tuesday after damage to an overhead power cable disrupted suburban train services on the Chennai Beach-Tambaram line from 9.10 am. Many reached their workplaces late.
Twenty-four trains were cancelled and 13 others delayed for periods ranging from 60 minutes and 120 minutes.
The disruption occurred after a pantograph of a Pallavaram-Chennai train broke and damaged an overhead power cable at the crossover of Chennai-Tambaram and Tambaram-Chennai line near Pallavaram station. Soon, railway staff found that another train (B38) had already gone up to the Fort station with a faulty pantograph and damaged the overhead cable at several locations on the way.
