Mayawati aide pays the price for high-currency garlands

The high-currency garlands controversy here claimed its first high-profile victim on Thursday as Chief Minister Mayawati shunted out Additional Cabinet Secretary and Principal Secretary (Information) Vijay Shanker Pandey purportedly for failure to check “adverse publicity”.

The acceptance of currency note garlands by Ms. Mayawati and widespread public criticism it generated amid a lot of flak from the Opposition parties has brought the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party here under the scanner of the Income Tax Department. The spokesperson of the Karnataka unit of the BSP, Y. N. Sharma, has already been expelled from the party by Ms. Mayawati for leaking information to the Press about the maker of the much talked about garlands whose monetary value has been estimated from several lakhs to several crores.

Mr. Vijay Shankar Pandey has been sent out to the Medical and Health Department as Principal Secretary, replacing Pradeep Shukla, who has been transferred as Principal Secretary, Food and Civil Supplies. Mr. Pandey will also be the Project Director of UP Health Development System. Principal Secretary (Revenue) Shailesh Krishna returns to the Chief Minister's Secretariat as Principal Secretary to the CM and Principal Secretary, Information. Principal Secretary (Food and Civil Supplies) Jacob Thomas has been designated Principal Secretary (Revenue). In fact, the State Director for Information and Public Relations, A. K. Upadhyaya, too has been moved. Special Secretary (Finance) Arvind Narain Mishra is the new Information Director.
