Orissa to implement Right to Education

In a belated move to ensure education for all, the Orissa government on Wednesday decided to implement the Right to Education Act from April 1, 2010, marking the state’s foundation day.

A formal decision to this effect was taken at a high level review meeting held here under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

The Act requires all children below 14 years of age to have access to compulsory education.

To implement the Act, the state will be spending a whopping Rs 16,000 crore in the next five years. The money will be spent in construction of separate toilets for boys and girls and environment-friendly kitchens to cook mid-day meals. A sizeable portion of the fund will also be utilized for training of teachers.

The teacher-student ratio will be fixed at 30:1 and each class will have at least two teachers.
