Apple's iPad goes on sale for first time in America

It will be the first time consumers have been able to get their hands on the much-hyped computer and test out its capabilities.

The device is expected to revolutionise the way people browse the internet, read books and newspapers.

Some eager customers queued overnight in a bid to be the first to pick up an iPad at Apple's stores in New York, Washington, Boston and San Francisco.

But queues were generally smaller than those seen at launch of the iPhone three years ago because the iPad has been available to pre-order since March.

The first iPads will go on sale in the United States on Saturday at 9am New York time and is due to be available in Britain in late April.

Apple has promoted the iPad as an innovative lightweight mobile computer which combines the best of a smartphone and a laptop.

The 9.7-inch touch-screen tablet resembles an oversized iPhone and runs on the same simplified operating system.
