Mayawati places hurdles in Rahul's path

As Rahul Gandhi gears up to take on Mayawati on her home turf, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister is making sure it's not an easy ride for the young Gandhi scion. In her latest move, Mayawati has denied Rahul Gandhi permission to garland the Ambedkar statue in her bastion as he visits Ambedkar Nagar district, specially created by the Mayawati Government in 1995 and has a large concentration of Dalits.

Rahul Gandhi will be in Ambedkar Nagar to flag off the 'Chetna Yatra' to mark 125 years of the Congress' establishment, even as the BSP is planning to stage a demonstration in Ambedkar Nagar against what it calls the UPA government's "wrong policies" and the "short comings" in the Women's Reservation Bill.

Both the programmes are slated to be held almost at the same time and at a short distance from each other. Congress and the BSP have mobilised cadres from neighbouring districts for their respective rallies.

This is not the first run-in between Rahul Gandhi and Mayawati. The Congress MP and AICC General Secretary has earned the ire of Mayawati on many previous occasions with his impromptu visits to Uttar Pradesh.

The address by Rahul in Ambedkar Nagar today is seen by many to be a part of a larger strategy. The rally is seen as part of the Congress' attempts to prepare ground for the assembly elections in 2012. The Congress, which was virtually wiped out in the state in the last decade, has of late seen a revival, the latest being its impressive performance of bagging 21 out of 80 seats in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
