Andhra tycoon dies of heart attack after daughter killed by kidnappers

Shocked after hearing that his 10-year-old daughter Vaishnavi had been killed by her kidnappers, her grief-stricken father Palagani

Prabhakar Rao suffered a massive cardiac arrest late on Monday and passed away on Tuesday morning.

“The fact that his brother-in-law Venkat Rao Goud was the mastermind behind the grueome plot seems to have been too much for the 53-year-old businessman to bear. He slipped into a coma and could not be revived,” a doctor attending on him said.

All commercial establishments and educational institutions in the city closed for the day with a voluntary bandh being observed, while an outpouring public outcry swept across the state demanding stringent punishment for the killers. Meanwhile, political leaders of all hues rushed to the city to be present at the funeral of Prabhakar and be one with the sentiments of the people.

Addressing a press conference in Hyderabad, CM K Rosaiah said the government was planning to set up a fast-track court to ensure speedy disposal of the case. Among those who attended the funeral were four ministers, opposition leader Chandrababu Naidu, PRP president Chiranjeevi and local MP Lagadapati Rajagopal, who airdashed from Delhi in a private plane.

Vaishnavi, 10, was abducted on January 30 while she was going to school along with her brother in a car. The kidnappers killed the car driver Lakshman Rao while the girl’s brother Sai Teja, 12, managed to escape. The charred body of Vaishnavi was found in a boiler in a car garage at Autonagar in Guntur, 50 km from Vijaywada, on Monday evening. She had been throttled within a few hours of the kidnapping. Along with Venkat, his relative Srinivas Rao and two history-sheeters were also nabbed. Srinivas, on grilling by the police, revealed the plot and it was discovered that Vaishnavi was a victim of a family property dispute that arose from liquor baron Prabhakar’s two marriages.
