India's Afghan missions could be struck again

Close on the heels of terror attacks on two Kabul hotels that killed 6 Indians, intelligence agencies have warned of possible strikes on Indian missions in the Afghan capital and Jalalabad.

There are credible intelligence inputs from our own agencies, corroborated by foreign agencies, that terrorists have sneaked into Kabul and Jalalabad to target the Indian embassy, top Home Ministry sources said.

Security officials expressed shock at US special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke’s statement that he didn’t believe Indians alone were the target in those attacks. “I don’t accept the fact that this was an attack on an Indian facility like the embassy. There were foreigners, non-Indian foreigners, hurt. It was a soft target.

Let’s not jump to conclusions,” Holbrooke said.

“There were six Indians among 8 killed. What more evidence do you need than this?” asked an official.

After reviewing the security status of its missions and other interests in Afghanistan, India is expected to increase the level of its preparedness to deal with terror attacks of such a scale. India has already beefed up the security of Indians involved in rehabilitation work.
